Talk on LBS in India and a mobile VoIP demo

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Topic: ‘Opposite to’ and ‘Next to’: Getting directions is just as hard as predicting directions of LBS in India , a talk by Deepak Srinivasan, CEO of Mobiance, mobile LBS startup.

Description:The two most common words one encounters in getting directions in India are ‘opposite to’ and ‘next to’ – which could mean anything from ‘in front of’,‘behind’, ‘adjacent’, ‘in the same block’ and so on. Predicting the direction of how LBS will evolve in India is no easier with multiple interpretations and implications. Recent developments in the various sectors of the Indian market indicate the increasing awareness of Location Services and the willingness to adopt these services. However, in an early market like India, Location Services face significant challenges ranging from lack of quality mapping data, strict privacy issues to varied customer perceptions. The talk would try to explore how the Indian market and consumers benefit from making LBS part of their activities and the various challenges that come about with it.

Rural Opportunities in India; MobiTop Launch

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Topic: Rural Economic Opportunities in the Mobile Space by Sriram Raghavan, President, Comat Technologies.

“Several governmental and private initiatives in India in the last few years have aimed at creating economic frameworks in rural areas for businesses to operate in. This talk isn’t about mobile, per se — it’s about the creation and stabilisation of new markets, of why these weren’t viable before, of how economic growth and policy change is affording their viability, and of how they may be accessed. Mobile entrepreneurs may have an easier time than most, since they provide a critical foundational layer for better integration with the larger economy.”

Demo:
MobiTop platform by Mobisy.

“MobiTop, is a mobile phone application development platform with which application developers, device manufacturers and operators can easily develop and deploy new breed of applications with Web 2.0 features. Key challenges faced by today’s mobile application developers are, “Device incompatibilities” and “Ineffective application delivery platforms”. We @ Mobisy are trying to address these major issues by providing a platform to develop applications quickly in standard web technologies like AJAX and limiting the porting issues only to browser, e.g. standard Web 2.0 applications. Further, we are enabling Internet based deployment of applications, which provides security at the same time avoiding complicated and lengthy, signing procedures. We also provide native device access capabilities(like Call,SMS, Contacts), offline mode and many other key features to watch out for.”

Mobile Media Revolution & India

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

April’s talk would be about mobile media revolution in India and speaker is Dr. Aditya Dev Sood of CKS.

Abstract of the topic

“Those seeking to be involved with the coming media revolutions that are bound to unfold in emerging economies such as India would be advised to leave behind the expectation that these regions shall merely ‘come online’ or replicate industrial societies’ adoption and enthusiasm for the web as it exists today. This will not merely be a web 3.0 or a mobile 2.0. The world of mobile media in India by the end of this decade will be more richly immersive, multiply-mediated and nuanced, using subtle forms of gesture, and movement — it will be an entire ecology, growing, shifting and changing at the rate of sociality itself.”

Aditya Dev Sood is the author of the Mobile Development Report, which offers a careful analysis of the social dynamics of mobile phone usage among urban and rural users from lower income backgrounds. It argues that new kinds of mobile enabled welfare and social services will not only revolutionize life in rural areas, but also represent the most important new opportunity for mobile ventures.

Building web sites for Mobile users & Product Demos

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Continuing the format from last time we will have a talk and a demo in this month’s MoMo.The topic of discussion this time is “Building websites for Mobile users” led by M.T Ragunath of Google India.

Talk

Abstract of the topic
There are several different types of mobile phones in use around the world. Phones differ widely in terms of their capabilities such as screen size, supported content types, supported markup, etc. Many of the features such as rich graphics, and complex scripts, that work well on desktop browsers are often unsuitable for mobile handsets.
Designing a web site for mobile users requires site designers to keep things simple, and to follow certain practices so that the sites are accessible to a broad range of mobile devices. Badly designed mobile web sites result in a poor experience for end users. In this discussion some of these issues would be discussed by working through some examples of how to design web pages so that they work better on mobile phones.

About the Speaker
M. T. Raghunath has been with Google since Jan 2006 and has been working in the area of Mobile Search and Mobile Ads. Earlier he was a Research Staff Member at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center, where he was part of the team that built the first Bluetooth connected wristwatch computer running Linux and X11. Raghunath has a B.Tech from IIT Madras and a Ph.D in Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley. Raghunath is interested in building innovative solutions for enabling access to information on a wider scale.
